Khe Sanh was once known for stories of a brutal wartime past. But Khe Sanh today has changed. Alongside historic sites connected to the old battlefield, you will find coffee hills in Huong Phung, Bru–Van Kieu villages at the foot of the Sa Mu range, mountain roads, and trekking routes leading to some of Quang Tri’s highest peaks.

A trip to Khe Sanh can therefore take many different forms. You can learn about history at Ta Con, visit a coffee farm to see how coffee is grown and processed, then continue to Chenh Venh to meet the Van Kieu community. Or you can spend two days on the Pa Thien–Voi Mep trek.

If you are planning a Khe Sanh trip, the suggestions below will help you choose the experiences that suit you best.

What Can You Experience in Khe Sanh?

Khe Sanh is a good choice for travelers who want to spend time discovering a destination through its different layers of stories.

If you are interested in agriculture and coffee, Huong Phung is worth spending time in. It is a well-known Arabica-growing area around Khe Sanh. Some farms welcome visitors to learn about coffee cultivation, harvesting, processing, and tasting.

If you are interested in history, Ta Con and several sites in central Khe Sanh can be combined into one route. For those interested in local culture and everyday life, Chenh Venh offers an opportunity to connect with the Bru–Van Kieu community. The area has homestays, local food, and village life surrounded by forest.

If you want more outdoor activity, Sa Mu Pass, the waterfalls in the western mountains, or the Pa Thien–Voi Mep trek are good options.

These experiences can be combined in different ways, depending on how much time you have and how active you want your trip to be.

Coffee experiences: from the farm to “Make Coffee, Not War”

In 1926, the first coffee plants were brought to Khe Sanh. The year 2026 marks 100 years of coffee in Khe Sanh. Quang Tri is celebrating with a series of activities under the theme “Tracing the Footsteps of 100 Years of Khe Sanh Coffee.” With the message “Make Coffee, Not War,” the activities connect coffee with the region’s history, culture, agriculture, and experiential tourism.

Instead of simply enjoying a cup of coffee at a café, visitors can explore the growing areas and learn how a local product is produced.

Khe Sanh Coffee Tour is opening up this kind of experience. The tour connects coffee-growing areas in Huong Phung with community-based tourism sites and historic places in the area.

Khe Sanh Coffee Tour

At the farms, visitors can learn about coffee plants, cultivation, harvesting, processing, and tasting. The experience can be even more interesting during the harvest season.

At Ara Farm Hoang Luan in Xa Ry Village, visitors can learn about coffee cultivation and take part in activities related to harvesting, processing, and tasting. It is one of the most hands-on ways to understand why Arabica coffee from Khe Sanh holds a special place in the region’s agricultural story.

At Madam Huong Coffee in Cop Village, Huong Phung, the garden follows an agroforestry approach, with several layers of plants growing within the same space. This creates a broader story about coffee, land, and the mountain ecosystem.

Historic sites to visit

If you want to dedicate a morning or afternoon to this theme, several sites around Khe Sanh can be combined into one route.

Ta Con Airfield should be a priority. It was once a strategically important military base associated with the Khe Sanh battlefield between 1966 and 1968. Today, the site preserves various remains and artifacts that help visitors understand the scale and position of the former base during the war.

Ta Con Airfield (Khe Sanh Combat Base)

In central Khe Sanh, the Khe Sanh Monument is a memorial associated with the Khe Sanh–Route 9 Campaign. Nearby, the Khe Sanh Stupa is a place of remembrance and gratitude, reflecting values of peace. These two sites can be combined with Ta Con on a historical sightseeing route.

Chai Nha Xanh Huong Hoa (Huong Hoa Green Lean-to House Historical Relic Complex) is another option if you want to learn more about wartime memories and the lives of people in the border region. Located in the Khe Sanh area, it is also included in local tourism routes.

If you have more time, you can extend the journey toward Lao Bao to visit Lao Bao Prison, a historic site associated with the struggle against French colonial rule. However, this is better treated as an extended route rather than a quick stop on a one-day Khe Sanh itinerary.

For a short trip, you do not need to visit every site. Ta Con + one or two historic sites in central Khe Sanh is enough to leave time for coffee, culture, or nature.

Meet the Van Kieu community in Chenh Venh

From Huong Phung, the journey can continue to Chenh Venh, a community-based tourism destination at the foot of the Sa Mu range.

Chenh Venh is home to the Bru–Van Kieu community, community forest, streams, and waterfalls. At Chenh Venh Community Tourism Village, local residents welcome visitors directly and benefit from tourism.

Chenh Venh Community-Based Tourism Village

One of the easiest ways to experience local life is to stay at a homestay rather than simply stopping for a few hours. A home-cooked meal, a conversation with your hosts, or everyday activities can give you a closer look at life in the mountain community.

Chenh Venh can also be combined with Chenh Venh Waterfall. The route to the waterfall passes through the community forest, with streams and natural sections of trail along the way. It is a suitable option for a light afternoon of activity after visiting a coffee farm.

If you want a deeper experience, you can spend the night in Chenh Venh and continue the journey the following day.

Sa Mu Pass: clouds and mountain scenery

Sa Mu Pass is one of the routes that makes a Khe Sanh trip distinctive.

As you travel toward Huong Phung, the landscape gradually changes. Winding roads through the mountains, mist, and clouds create a very different atmosphere from central Khe Sanh.

Cloud watching at Sa Mu depends heavily on the weather. Early mornings often offer better chances of seeing beautiful clouds and mist. However, there is no fixed time that guarantees a sea of clouds.

If you take this route, allow time to stop at safe locations, enjoy the scenery, and take photos.

Sa Mu can also be combined with Huong Phung and Chenh Venh into a one-day route:

Khe Sanh → Sa Mu Pass → Huong Phung → coffee farm → Chenh Venh → Khe Sanh

For a more relaxed trip, you can stay overnight in Chenh Venh and return to Khe Sanh the next day.

Food, accommodation & getting around

What to eat

Food can become part of the cultural experience when you travel toward the Van Kieu villages.

At Chenh Venh and other community-based tourism sites, it is best to arrange meals in advance if you want to eat at a homestay. Local hosts can prepare local dishes using ingredients available in the area.

Around Khe Sanh and Huong Phung, trying locally grown Arabica coffee is also worth including in your trip. If you have already visited a coffee farm, enjoying the coffee afterward can feel more meaningful because you understand the growing area and how it is produced.

Where to stay

If you want a community-based experience, consider staying at a homestay in Chenh Venh. Spending the night gives you more time for dinner, conversations with local residents, and exploring the surroundings the following morning.

If you prefer more private accommodation, you can stay at guesthouses, hotels, or bungalows, such as Valley Farm, Mien Vien Thao & Farmstay Vuon Nhiet Doi, Khe Sanh Luxury Hotel, Khanh Phuong Hotel, Nam Mua Bungalow & Retro Khe Sanh, and others.

For Pa Thien–Voi Mep trekking, the itinerary and accommodation depend on the trekking program, which usually includes an overnight stay or camping along the route.

Getting around

Khe Sanh lies along Route 9, making it convenient to connect with Dong Ha and other areas in eastern Quang Tri.

From Khe Sanh to Huong Phung and Sa Mu Pass, both motorbikes and cars can be used. Keep in mind that some sections are steep and winding, and mountain weather can change quickly.

If you plan to visit a coffee farm, community homestay, or trekking route, contact them in advance to check visitor arrangements and weather conditions.

You can also see Khe Sanh Travel Guide for an overview of the destination, including when to go, food, accommodation, and transportation.

What can you combine with Khe Sanh?

Pa Thien–Voi Mep

If you want more physical activity, Pa Thien–Voi Mep is one of the options worth considering.

Voi Mep Peak rises to 1,707 m, while Pa Thien Peak reaches 1,625 m. The trek passes through forest, streams, and steep sections, making it suitable for people who have prepared physically for the route.

The two-day, one-night journey combines trekking, camping, sunset and sunrise views in the mountains. When weather conditions are favorable, you may also have a chance to see a sea of clouds in the early morning.

This route is best given its own two-day, one-night itinerary rather than combined with too many other sightseeing stops.

Chenh Venh – Sa Mu – Huong Phung

For travelers who do not want a multi-day trek, this is a gentler option:

Khe Sanh → Sa Mu → Huong Phung → Chenh Venh

You can combine scenic stops, a coffee farm visit, an introduction to Van Kieu culture, and a homestay stay.

Ta Puong and the western area

If you have more time, the journey can be extended toward Ta Puong. The area has caves, waterfalls, forests, and Van Kieu villages.

This route is better suited to longer trips for travelers who want to explore deeper into the western mountains of Quang Tri.

One-day Khe Sanh itinerary

If you only have one day, it is better to choose two or three types of experiences rather than trying to fit too many places into the itinerary.

Morning

  • Depart from Khe Sanh.
  • Travel toward Huong Phung.
  • Visit a coffee farm.
  • Learn about coffee growing, harvesting, and processing.
  • Taste local coffee.

Lunch

  • Travel to Chenh Venh.
  • Have a local lunch.

Afternoon

There are two options:

Option 1 – nature and culture:
Explore Chenh Venh, Chenh Venh Waterfall, and the Van Kieu village setting.

Option 2 – history:
Return to Khe Sanh and visit Ta Con Airfield.

If you want to include both Ta Con and Chenh Venh in one day, shorten the time spent at each stop and check travel times in advance.

Two-day, one-night Khe Sanh itinerary

Two days allow for a more relaxed pace and more time to explore the western area.

What does Khe Sanh offer today?

Khe Sanh was once known for stories of a brutal war. Today, the area has new stories about coffee, Van Kieu culture, mountains, forests, and new travel experiences.

A trip can begin at Ta Con, continue to a coffee farm in Huong Phung, stay overnight in Chenh Venh, or go deeper into the mountains on a Pa Thien–Voi Mep trek.

These are different sides of Khe Sanh today.
